What to Expect at Your First Driving Lesson

Grow Driving School

Your first driving lesson can feel intimidating, but knowing what to expect takes a lot of the anxiety away. Here’s a walkthrough of what a typical first lesson at Grow Driving School looks like.

Before You Start the Engine

Your instructor will start by introducing themselves and making you feel comfortable. They’ll walk you through the vehicle’s controls — steering wheel, pedals, mirrors, signals, and gear selector. You’ll adjust your seat and mirrors for optimal visibility and comfort.

Starting in a Quiet Area

You won’t be thrown into traffic right away. Your first lesson typically starts in a quiet parking lot or low-traffic residential area. This gives you space to get comfortable with the basics: starting, stopping, steering, and using your signals.

Learning the Fundamentals

During your first lesson, you’ll focus on:

  • Smooth acceleration and braking
  • Proper steering technique
  • Checking mirrors regularly
  • Using turn signals
  • Understanding basic right-of-way rules

Your instructor will guide you through each step patiently.

Building Confidence Gradually

As you become more comfortable, your instructor may have you drive on slightly busier roads. But there’s never any pressure — the lesson moves at your pace. Every student is different, and our instructors adapt to your comfort level.

What to Bring

Bring your learner’s permit (or valid license if you’re taking refresher lessons), wear comfortable shoes (no flip-flops or high heels), and bring a positive attitude. That’s really all you need.

After the Lesson

Your instructor will give you feedback on what went well and what to practice. They’ll outline what you’ll work on in upcoming lessons, so you always know what’s ahead.
